The Arizona Board of Regents is hosting its fifth annual Regents' Cup speech and debate competition in 2024, and this year's theme is "Democracy, Justice, and the Rule of Law."
Students from Arizona's three public universitiesArizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizonawill compete against each other in the debate and storytelling categories, with winners taking home $15,000, $12,000, and $5,000 scholarships, respectively, the Arizona Republic reports.
"The one thing they have in common is respect for the First Amendment and civility in their exchange of ideas," says Regent Doug Goodyear, who serves as a regent advisor for the event.
Some 40 judges will serve as judges this year, including elected officials, business and community leaders, journalists, and educators, per a Regents' Cup press release.
